Flu Season: Quick Health Tips
As the flu season begins, here are some things you can do to help reduce the chances of getting sick. Flu seasons begins in October and extends till May.
Hand Washing:
This sage old advice remains true. Use warm water and soap; and take your time (at least 20 seconds). Encourage young kids to silently sing the ABC or Happy Birthday song twice, while washing their hands, to ensure that adequate time and attention is used. Also avoid touching surfaces in public restrooms; use a paper towel to close the faucet, touch door handles, etc.
Handling Things:
Even after washing your hands, try to keep from touching your face unnecessarily, particularly avoiding the nose and mouth area. Try to prevent direct handling of food. While out, pack meals that require utensils (fork & spoon), instead of meals that require eating with hands, i.e. sandwiches, chips, etc.
Clean Surfaces:
Clean commonly shared surfaces and items, such as door knobs, computer keyboards, pens, desks, counters, etc. to prevent spreading of germs. Carry a hand sanitizer and use as needed, though cautiously (keep out of reach of children). Also, sanitizers do not clean visibly soiled hands, and may not remove chemicals and all germs.
Physical Activity:
Physical activity/exercise can help boost the immune system. However, if you are already sick/unwell, take appropriate measures, before embarking on any exercise regimen.
Prevention:
At the end of the day, prevention is the best solution. Getting a flu shot is important, and doing all the recommended things, such as washing your hands, eating right, drinking plenty of fluids, getting enough sleep, and keeping physically fit.
